Help Your Teen Manage Their Dental Health
At Ackley Dental Group, we are passionate about the oral health of our patients of all ages. Since we typically see our patients only twice a year, we encourage you and your family members to maintain a regular oral hygiene routine at home to ensure your teeth are being cared for between visits to our office. While we know adults are more than capable of handling this directive, our child patients may need some extra help and direction from the adults in the home. Sometimes, problems can arise with teenagers, who are known for being reluctant to follow directions and may not make their oral health a priority.
Create Good Oral Health Habits
Even if you don’t have a teenager at home, you may still remember the feeling of leaving childhood and longing for the freedom of adulthood. It is a time of uncertainty, when you are learning more about yourself and what you enjoy without the influence of your parents. We want to help our teenage patients understand the harm they can cause their teeth when they don’t take care of them properly.
Creating good oral health habits during early childhood helps young patients understand the importance of maintaining their oral health through the teenage years and into adulthood. Aside from brushing and flossing, regular dental care in our office is extremely important. It is also wise to stress the importance of making good food choices and the negative effects certain foods and beverages can have on teeth. Tips to help protect your teen’s teeth include:
- Encourage water in place of sports drinks, soft drinks, and juice
- Provide healthy snack options and discourage fast food and junk food
- Urge brushing and flossing after meals, especially with braces
- Advocate wearing a mouthguard when playing any sport
